The useful question for a Penang ferry journey is not simply “When is the last ferry?” It is which direction you are travelling and what connection you need after the crossing. Butterworth and George Town have different terminal names, and the Penang Port Commission publishes separate departure windows for the two directions.

Identify the mainland and island terminals
The Commission’s ferry-services page identifies Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal at Jalan Pangkalan Butterworth on the mainland and Raja Tun Uda Terminal at Pengkalan Weld in George Town on the island. Its published departure window is 6.30am–11pm from Butterworth to George Town and 7am–11.30pm in the opposite direction.
Those times describe the directions listed by the authority. They should not be turned into a promise that you can arrive at the terminal at the last minute and board. This article does not establish a boarding cut-off, an exact crossing duration or the service status on a particular future date.
Write the journey as two separate legs
For a mainland-to-island trip, first record your route to Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal. Then separately record how you will travel from Raja Tun Uda Terminal to your destination in George Town. Reverse that sequence when leaving the island. This prevents a common planning error: using a terminal on the wrong side as the starting point in an address search.
When meeting someone, include both the terminal name and the side of the strait in the message. “The ferry terminal” can be clear to a regular commuter and ambiguous to a visitor. A meeting place inside a terminal also needs agreement with the person you are meeting; the terminal address alone does not identify a particular queue or exit.
Plan the onward connection independently
If your onward trip involves a train or bus, obtain that service’s departure information from its own operator. Do not treat the ferry’s final departure as the final departure of the whole journey. Walking to a connection, locating its boarding point and any waiting time are separate parts of the trip.
Our editorial recommendation is to choose a crossing that leaves a workable margin for the next leg, instead of building a plan around the last advertised departure. The size of that margin depends on the connection and your needs; we have not measured transfer times or verified a guaranteed connection.
Keep fares and boarding eligibility in their own check
Before paying, confirm the fare category and boarding conditions that apply to you with the current operator information. This guide does not quote a fare or promise that a particular vehicle can board. Historical vehicle statistics are not a sufficient basis for present boarding eligibility.
For a group, agree in advance whether everyone is making the same onward journey. A ferry trip can be shared while the island or mainland leg differs. Save the exact terminal names and the next destination in a note that is accessible without searching through a long conversation.
The practical takeaway
Choose the direction first, confirm the matching terminal, then check the next transport leg. The published timetable is one part of that plan. A precise meeting message and a realistic connection plan are the parts you can organise yourself without inventing a live service guarantee.
