Cheah Kongsi’s association and building dates: a clearer George Town history note

“How old is Cheah Kongsi?” needs a more precise answer than a single year. An association, its land, its ancestral building and its registered name can have different beginnings. For a George Town history note, identify what each date describes before calculating an age. This also prevents a caption from making a restored or renamed institution appear newly founded.

Four dates answer four questions

The association’s own account gives 1810 for its establishment, 1828 for the acquisition of the site, 1858 to 1873 for the building’s construction, and 1 April 2011 for registration as Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi. These dates describe distinct events in the institution’s account. They should not be compressed into competing answers to the same question.

A caption about the organisation can use the establishment date with attribution. A caption about the ancestral building should use the building period. The later name record does not establish that the association or its structure first existed in 2011.

Keep community history attached to its narrator

The source describes the clan’s ancestral origins, emblem and religious traditions. Those are part of the association’s explanation of itself. When summarising them, use wording such as “the association’s account describes” rather than claiming that this article independently reconstructed a family lineage.

A surname shared by two people is not enough to establish their relationship or membership. If your project concerns a particular family, its records require separate work. A visitor-facing history page is a useful starting point, not a substitute for examining a person’s documented ancestry.

Describe the institution rather than just its façade

A photograph of an ornate building can obscure the difference between a monument and an association with members and traditions. In a short history note, explain which institution the building serves before describing its appearance. Avoid assigning a decorative motif a religious meaning unless the source identifies that meaning.

It is also helpful to distinguish an ancestral hall from an interpretation display. Looking at a public explanation and entering a space used for observance are different visitor tasks. This article has not verified present access to either, or permission to photograph ceremonies.

Make the caption auditable

Record the institution’s name, the date represented and the source of the statement. If a photo shows only an exterior, say so. Do not caption it as a complete survey of the interior or use an image taken elsewhere as proof of a feature at Cheah Kongsi.

For a timeline, place each event on a separate line. Leave construction, registration and restoration categories visible. If a later source supplies an additional date, first ask which event it concerns; apparent disagreement can sometimes come from comparing different events.

Scope and source check

The association’s history page was read on 20 October 2026. This guide concerns Cheah Kongsi in George Town on Penang island. It makes no admission, opening, ritual-access or independently verified genealogical claim. A visit plan needs the association’s current visitor information separately.
