George Town’s 2012 trade directory: trace an art-supply record without claiming the shop is open

GTWHI’s 2012 directory of traditional trades can help trace George Town’s art-supply and stationery history. It is not a current shopping guide. A named business and street in that record are a research lead; they do not establish that the business is still operating at the address, stocks the same materials or offers a service today.

Begin with the directory’s date

The directory groups entries by trade and includes an art-supplies and stationers section. Its historical descriptions name Van Hin Book Co. and Syarikat Nanyang Book Co. among Carnarvon Street entries, with different kinds of supplies described. This article treats those as 2012 directory records, checked on 20 October 2026.

The PDF’s later upload path does not make the business information current to that upload year. Keep publication context and source-check date separate.

A trade category and a business are different entities

The art-supply category describes a kind of urban activity. Each business entry identifies a particular participant in the directory. A general statement about the trade should not be converted into a claim that every listed shop carried every product.

For a local-history note, preserve the business name, street and the brief description as separate fields. If translation or spelling differs in another source, keep the difference visible until the identity is established.

Use the record to ask a new question

A research question might concern how stationery, painting materials and calligraphy-related supplies were documented within the heritage area. The directory can indicate where to start, but it is not a complete account of customer experience or a census of every business in Penang.

A current follow-up would need current first-hand business information or another appropriate record. Do not invent an interview, family succession story or recollection of a purchase to bridge the historical gap.

Do not turn old descriptions into product promises

A material named in the directory does not establish today’s inventory, quality, price or availability. Nor does inclusion amount to a GTWHI product endorsement. This guide recommends no purchase and supplies no unverified phone number or contact person.

If a future article becomes a current practical guide, its business facts should be rechecked independently and dated. The historical directory can remain a contextual source without doing work it was not designed to do.

A useful historical citation

Describe the source as GTWHI’s 2012 directory and the entry as a record of a named trade at that time. State what remains unverified about the present. That gives George Town’s commercial heritage a concrete documentary basis without pretending a fourteen-year-old listing is live. Primary source: directory by trades.
